Can Black Be Beautiful For a Flower Girl Dress?

As we all know black is a strong and imposing color which is a favorite of the fashion world. When we talk about “Black”, we will think of night, boldness, magic and mystery. Black is also a color of myth and symbol, often a color worn by icons of history. Audrey Hepburn is remembered in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' for her black gown; every fashion guru will preach the "little black dress". And of course, the traditional groom stands at the altar, awaiting the bride in a classic black tuxedo.

For many reasons, black is not a traditional color for children. Black is probably even less accepted as a color for flower girl dresses. Since Queen Victoria changed wedding history with her white wedding gown and beautiful flower girls also in white, white is certainly the most traditional and popular color for flower girls of the Western World. As weddings become more personal to their couples, we see different shades of whites, pastels, and perhaps sashes and accents added in theme colors. But black, as the opposite of white, is not an often selected color for the flower girl dress.

In recent decades, the wedding industry has seen an endless range of variations on the traditional wedding. Concerning the mere aesthetic application of favorite colors to the wedding ceremony, individual choice here is for enjoyment and presentation. However, adding black to the flower girl (or the bride) will be noticed and not always approved by guests and family. Black, with its mystical and austere associations, is accepted as enchanting for adult formal wear, but not widely accepted as appropriate for children. Flower girls in black will have an impact on your ceremony.

Because black and white are such a popular color choice among modern engaged couples, we have seen flower girl dresses in all black, in white with black sashes, in red with black embroidery....the options are without limit. As wedding professionals, we are strongly tied to the beauty and charm of wedding traditions. We are also in sincere support of individual expression for the engaged couple in their wedding celebration.

Given this, it is certainly up to the engaged couple and the flower girls' parents, what color she will wear in the grand event. While we have seen several all black flower girl dresses, they are somewhat austere and suited to formal or uniquely themed weddings. The young girls are somewhat "blotted" out when dressed in all black at the evening events. There is a radiance of a little girl in white that is perhaps responsible for the popularity of white. A very obvious middle-ground is to offer a white dress with a black sash. A black sash with a pretty bow at the back helps to generate some softness in the color. Online, there are hundreds of girls dress styles available in classic white or ivory with choices in color sashes. Black is almost always in the color option lists.

Another option is a dress with black as an accent color or pattern design. Both in stores and online, there are many dresses in black with ivory embroidery, brightly colored with black velvet flocking, or even embroidered with sparkling sequins. Patterns and accents can add black to the flower girl dress in fun and graphic presentations. Designs in black are always a classic and often modern as well.

Another thing to think about is the flower girl herself. From our experiences of selling children’s dresses for over 10 years, black is not a favorite color choice among little girls aged 4 to 8 (the conventional age of flower girls). Therefore, do consider the special little girl herself. Ask her how she feels about wearing black at a staged event, possibly in front of an audience of considerable size. Black is becoming a popular color among young girls, and dress preference is becoming less princess oriented. We now have young girls who prefer classic A-line styles or simple cotton dresses.

Lastly, please consider the "feel" of your wedding ceremony carefully. Using logic and your inner sense of style to confirm if black is an appropriate color for your children’s formal wear.
